Letter from the President

Greetings Arts and Culture Friends

The Hygienic Art Park Project has evolved from its conception as a public arts garden and beautification of its surrounding building lots to the construction of the sculpture garden and outdoor theater. The implications of this "work in progress" are enormous for the advancement of art and economic development in downtown New London. Culture, art, community and prosperity all become reality as a result of this initiative.

Here, in the urban environment in a garden designed by landscape architect Brian Kent and Associates, we have seasonal botanical gardens around a mural plaza with embedded mosaic tile designs and a beautiful figurative sculpture, built by sculptor Rene Rhodes. The sculpture base is a waterfall surrounded by a reflecting pool and spirals which lead to the Race Rocks Garden. The park is seen through the wrought iron tree fences and front gates designed and built by blacksmith Clint Wright, which then frames the Portico, a gathering area that fronts Bank Street. The Linden Bosque is a grove of shaped trees that provides shade and serves as the "forest" which separated the plaza from the theater area. Serpentine Gardens will enclose the outdoor theater lawn and a wonderful multifunctional theater stage house, designed by architect Duncan Milne, which has classic renaissance building elements in its facade, is already in its construction phase.

The Art Park will be open to the public during the day and during gallery hours. A program committee is being formed to organize a series of events which will include theater, film, music, dance by regional arts and educational groups and special community events are also being discussed.

The Hygienic Arts Park is where old world and other world collide in an unprecedented public arts park in downtown New London.

Your support of this project is very important and vital to its completion. Tax deductible donations are needed and community giving opportunities with inscribed plaques are offered. Please open your hearts and your wallets to help with this grassroots arts initiative and become a part of the arts renaissance of downtown New London by supporting the Hygienic Art Park Project.

Sincerely,

President
